Color Harmony
How do you find color harmony in a painting? When your painting is done, and you say, “what is wrong with this painting?” Maybe the colors just don’t jive. You used EVERY beautiful color on your palette!!! and who can blame you, when there are sooo many to choose from!!!! Buying a color wheel from a local art supply store might help. Myriads of color combinations possible….or…. you could utilize color schemes from your favorite paintings! If you are attracted to color combinations in your favorite paintings, so are others.
I have fallen in love with Van Gogh’s use of emerald green. I didn’t use his exact colors in his exact proportions, but taking creative liberty, I incorporated the colors that would best show off my subject, the gladiolus. Emerald green is the background in both his painting and my gladiolus. Though his portrait uses more blues than the gladiolus, and my reds are much more ferocious, you get the idea. This is an easy and fun way to find guidance for a color scheme.
